This in-game logic can only go so far.

Obviously, it's because the man-made items are always used on other things. A potion is sprayed on something else - so when a Pokemon holds it, they're like, "Okay, so who am I meant to spray this with? I don't think you've taken any damage so it's clearly not you, and we're fighting the other guy so it's not him... what do??"

Well, that's my theory, anyway.

@Shard: Makes sense... for the smarter ones. The less intelligent probably think it's like a chew toy or something.

@Shard: Ooh, good point.

Nah. The real reason is that they are faking it. If we knew they could work man made stuff, we would have more firmly enslaved them and force them to do more work.

Right now they are bidding their time until they can sort out internal issues before going for all out way, and destroying the humans who found a way to enslave them!

@corruption: If you really think about how, overall, Pokemon are so much stronger, smarter, and more capable than humans, yes, it is surprising that humans are somehow the dominant species in the Pokemon world.

Maybe (most) Pokemon just don't care for that kind of responsibility, and are content to watch the silly little humans run around trying to make themselves more important.

"He's so smart, he doesn't even remember what he knows." - Ringo Starr, Yellow Submarine (the movie, not the song)

@corruption: I would just like to state for the record before the inevitable revolution that I have always treated my Pokemon with kindness and respect and have never viewed them as anything less than equals.

@Sanji: Wow! I've never gotten a "THIS" comment before. I'm flattered. LOL.

But, glad to see another trainer who treats their Pokemon as friends and partners!
